Open any agency directory for San Diego and a pattern appears fast. Clutch lists more than 500 firms under SEO here, and several nationally known names have their headquarters in the county. Clutch puts the average project for some of the biggest local firms at $50,000 to $199,999, and minimum project sizes here run from $1,000 to $50,000, with several starting at $10,000.
Now look at who needs search the most. San Diego County has 93,407 business locations with paid employees (U.S. Census Bureau, 2023) and about 310,000 businesses with no paid staff at all (2024). The family law practice in Escondido, the HVAC outfit in El Cajon, the nine-person lab supplier in Sorrento Valley: none of them fits a roster built for franchise systems and venture-backed brands.
Three kinds of firm compete for that work. National agencies headquartered here, strong but priced for national budgets. Local web-and-SEO shops that bundle search with site builds, some excellent, some treating SEO as a hosting add-on. And firms listed under San Diego whose teams mostly work somewhere else: on Clutch, seven of the top 18 or so keep under a fifth of their staff in the city.
Paid search will not close the gap. A single click on "san diego personal injury lawyer" averages about $151, and "san diego car accident lawyer" about $228. Skip organic search and you rent every lead at those prices. We work in the space between: senior SEO, priced for the businesses that make up most of the county.
